The fascination started quite unexpectedly.

There was always a little bit too much of it in Will, needs he knew shouldn’t be fulfilled but wanted more than anything.

So he bought one book on demons, read it cover to cover, and started on another.

By the time the internet was built he knew more than most, thought about summonings but never tried.

It turned out, he didn’t have to. The demon that came to him, came in the form of Hannibal Lecter.

There was no mistaking him as a demon, the way he walked and purred out promises with every breath but hurt with the next. Will was entirely entranced, caught up in his ruse even if he knew it was all for a purpose.

But Hannibal played with him while taking souls of others, spent nights in sessions and shared food that Will found questionable from the first meal but ate to see what human tasted like.

Hannibal still never took him, and years went by before he figured out why.

The thin line of love and murder between them cracked when Hannibal killed Abigail, the depth of love Will had expected the demon had for her was obviously faked.

Like the love he had for Will.

They parted and Will did not expect to see anything but bodies in his wake, but instead he left them alive.

All of them.

Will held back, forced himself to hide alone with the dogs in Florida and stay away from it all until Jack came with news.

“There are bodies again.”

Messy bodies, no sense of art or reason, and Will knew it wasn’t his demon who did these things.

Part of him thought for a moment the design seemed familiar.

But the deaths continued, building up more and more, until he started to think there was more to this than just killing.

A month into the Slasher, Hannibal dropped his first body in almost a year.

Will took one look at it and everything fell into place.

He couldn’t breathe for the sudden desperate need to be around Hannibal again, to understand, and went home to find Hannibal throwing bones to the dogs in his backyard.

“I won’t ask who those are from.”

Hannibal smiled, snapping his fingers and causing the dogs to stop their excitement.

“It’s taken years but you see the difference?”

Will nodded, closing his eyes as he felt Hannibal wrap an arm around his waist. “Embrace it.”

Will felt the demon inside him, the part long denied, rise up and fill in all the dark fascination.

“Hannibal.”

Hannibal kissed his cheek. “I never took your soul because it was never up for option.”

He felt his darkness overtake him and moaned at the sensation. “It feels…”

“Right,” Hannibal whispered, “it feels right. You denied yourself for so long and ignored that which is such a large part of you. Embrace it.”

Each flash of memory that flashed by reminded him of what he’d done. He was The Slasher, his darkness had been so hungry for blood it had taken over time and time again.

Will opened his eyes and everything looked different. “Oh.”

“I missed you, Will.”

Will turned in his arms and when he saw Hannibal with his new eyes he gasped. “I can see your darkness.”

Hannibal smiled. “It is quite like your own. The darkness in me sings for yours.”

Will huffed out a laugh and pulled him in for a kiss. They bit at each other’s mouths and he felt his teeth elongate with each passing moment. When they parted he felt tears in his eyes.

“I missed you too.”

@slashyrogue this is extremely good!!

I think a big part of why I read way more fanfiction than books is that there’s just a hell of a lot less exposition

the first 10 pages of most books are always “these are the main characters and here’s some background on each of them and this is the setting etc etc” and it’s such a fucking hassle getting to the plot sometimes

fanfic is just like “fuck it you know all of this already let’s go”

That’s a really good point.

Same here but there’s actually a point here of well written exposition.
Take AUs for example. Even in the most complicated, as-far-removed-from-canon settings we get at most a single paragraph before the actual fic where the author gives us a quick rundown of the rules for that universe. The rest we are left to figure out on our own and it works.

We’re not spoon fed every trivial detail when all we want is to get to the plot. Everything that’s important is said at the moment it is important, not sooner not later.
Especially in long fics characters often take on such a unique characterisation that you get to know them all over again but the readers do so organically, in the situations that define those characters as they happen.
Same with looks. The fic author generally assumes the readers know what the characters look like and don’t spend paragraphs describing them, and only bring it up when it fits the plot.

I’ve read a few fanfics from fandoms I’ve never been in and surprisingly it still worked out. I had generally a good idea of who these people were, what they did where and why and how they worked together.

Point is, if you’re a writer writing original fiction, pretend it’s fanfic and everyone knows your setting and characters already. That way you’ll only have to add a few details if and when your beta readers mention needing more information and chances are they won’t need a lot.

Bolding this fantastic advice.

Reblogging for the next time I write something original.

This is brilliant. I do a shit amount of world building but been blocked for the past week worrying about details and stuff.

Remember: you can always add in revisions. You just have to write first.
