You ever write something and you think, “I’ve used this exact sentence structure/phrasing/convention approximately eight million times before but goddammit I’m going to do it again?”
That’s about where I’m at right now.
If artists are allowed to have a signature style, then so am I, motherfucker.
Once I searched through every extant story on my harddrive for the phrase “s/he released a breath s/he hadn’t realised s/he’d been holding” and there is not enough bourbon in the world for the consequences of that action
Oh.
My.
God.
Tara.
YOU WERE MY FAVORITE AUTHOR WHEN I WAS FIFTEEN.
THIS IS ENTIRELY YOUR FUCKING FAULT.
I love you so much Seanan
But I just want you to know
Everyone in your October Daye novels does a lot of blinking
…love you lots
Most things with eyelids do a lot of blinking! I am blinking RIGHT NOW.
Underrealm is the Land of Frequent Frowns, I’ve been told.
I know I do the “released a breath they hadn’t realized they were holding*. I also repeat certain words, apparently, and I do a lot of thesaurus searching to fix that when I notice it. Then the arched eyebrow is a Thing. I know I also do other things, but no one has called me out on it yet.
me: i’m a good writer. i know my worth and i’m confident in my skill set and i know i can do this.
me, five minutes later: what if i’m terrible? what if everyone who has ever read my work and thought it was good was lying? too afraid to tell me the truth? blackmailed by aliens? what if everything i write is terrible and too scattered/forced/hollow what if i don’t know how to make a sentence. where do verbs go. how do u emotion
In fanfiction there is a difference between being a good writer and a popular writer.
Just
because you can write a well-structured story with dynamic and consistent writing and characters doesn’t mean you will be popular. And sometimes
stories that have disorganized plots, mediocre writing, and/or OOC characters will be held up as
the greatest things to ever exist.
Just because your writing isn’t
popular doesn’t mean you are a bad writer. Don’t ever compromise who
you are, who your characters are, your plot, your writing style, anything for the sake of readership.
There are popular writers everywhere.
But there are only so many good writers.
Never underestimate the power of a good trope. You might think someone will think it’s silly or overused but that’s what makes tropes so beloved. They’re repeated but loved over and over again.
Why? Potential future readers can easily figure out who you are and what you’re working on, and are therefore more likely to remember you, support you as an author, and buy your future books.
